- In the 1880s, farmers made up about half the US workers. Many candy makers sold sweets that were a mix of corn syrup, sugar, gelatin, fondant & coloring that was molded into the shapes of pumpkins, turnips, and other farm products.
- This molded candy was invented by George Renninger of the Wunderle Candy Company.
- The Goelitz Candy Company took George Renninger’s recipe and sold it as “chicken feed” candy.
- This candy became known as a ‘penny candy’ in the early 20th century. In the 1950s, it became America’s most highly advertised Halloween treat.
- Today the tricolor candy sells more than 35 million pounds in America annually.
